She sighed, a sound of profound weariness. The bass drum was a relentless heartbeat against her ribs. She was too tired to argue, too tired to even react.

She stood and walked into the kitchen, a dull ache in her back. She poured herself a cup of tea, the water steaming. She picked up a book, attempting to lose herself in the words.

The rhythm pulsed through the pages, a constant, unwanted reminder. She set the book down, defeated. She sat and closed her eyes, willing the sounds to stop, knowing they wouldn't.
