The relentless Florida sun beat down on Frank as he trimmed his overgrown hedges. He’d been putting it off for weeks, but the HOA was threatening fines. He paused, wiping the sweat from his brow, and glanced at Mr. Davies' meticulously manicured lawn next door. Mr. Davies, always so jovial, so willing to lend a hand. Frank had always assumed they were in the same boat. He’d just seen Mr. Davies being chauffeured away in a luxury car, to what Frank now knew was a sprawling mansion elsewhere in the city. The clippers felt heavy in his hands. He resumed clipping, the repetitive motion a strange sort of comfort.
