“Are you excited about the fence, honey?” she asked her husband. He didn’t answer right away. He just stared at the construction site, watching the worker. The silence was louder than the machinery.

She felt a weight in the room, an invisible pressure that was steadily increasing. He got up and moved to the window, his back to her, and she could see the tension in his shoulders.

He felt the sudden, unbearable urge to disappear. Anywhere. He felt like he was being imprisoned in a cage. He went to the door and quickly moved away, unable to say another word.
