The chipped mug warmed Amelia's hands, yet the heat did little to soothe the tremor in her fingers. She stared out the window, at the grey sky mirroring the inside of her head. Days blurred together, each one a carbon copy of the last. The email notification – the job application confirmation – felt like a pinprick, a tiny disruption in the monotony. Now, with Liam also applying, the competition felt as thick as the air in this stale apartment. She tossed the mug in the sink, the clatter echoing too loud in the sudden silence.

She paced the length of her tiny living room, the worn rug a familiar landscape under her feet. Her phone buzzed, a new message from Liam. He was already prepping for the interview, practicing answers. A surge of… something – not quite anger, but something akin to it – tightened her jaw. She needed to do something, anything. Pulling on her coat, she decided to visit the library, hoping the smell of old books could calm the turmoil that was brewing within.
