Gemotions

Maya couldn't sit still. The drone of the air conditioner felt like a personal affront. She paced the living room, the hardwood floors creaking a protest with each hurried step. She had a presentation to prepare for tomorrow, but her mind was a whirlwind of anxieties, each one a buzzing insect she couldn't swat away. She found herself drifting towards the attic door, a portal to a past she rarely visited.

Dust motes danced in the lone sunbeam slicing through the gloom. Her fingers traced the chipped paint of a cardboard box labeled "Maya - School Years." Curiosity, a persistent tickle, urged her on. She lifted the lid.

Inside, nestled amongst yellowed construction paper and faded report cards, were her assignments from elementary school. Each one, meticulously preserved, held a tiny piece of her youth. Her mother. She had no idea. A wave of conflicting emotions – amusement, embarrassment, a strange sort of fondness – washed over her. She smiled, then immediately frowned, the familiar anxiety returning with renewed vigor.
