The news hit David like a punch to the gut. *Published!* His teenage scribblings, all the clumsy metaphors and unrequited crushes, were now public. He ran a hand through his hair, his fingers tangling in the strands. He felt a tremor in his hands. He felt suddenly flushed. He felt a powerful desire to hide, to vanish.

He got up from his chair. The world suddenly felt too small, too confining. He had to *get away*. He paced his small apartment. A feeling had built up in his chest. It felt dangerous, explosive.

He grabbed his wallet and keys and left. He needed to be anywhere but here.
