The aroma of stale coffee and stale ambition hung heavy in the air of the procurement department. Jennifer stared at the invoice on her screen, the numbers blurring before her eyes. The repetition was suffocating. Then came the news. She was moving to the research and development department. Her new world awaited.

She drummed her fingers on the desk, a rapid-fire rhythm. Her leg bounced beneath the table, an uncontrollable tremor. She felt a lightness, but also a tension, a sense of being pulled in two directions. She closed her eyes, trying to visualize the future, a future where her feelings wouldn't be numbed.
