A tremor ran through Amelia as she scrolled through her Facebook feed, the late-night quiet of her apartment amplifying the electronic hum. She absently bit at her thumbnail, the chipped polish offering little resistance. A new friend request notification blinked. Michael Hanson. Her stomach lurched. He’d been the bane of her existence in middle school.

She considered ignoring it, deleting it, but a strange compulsion gripped her. She clicked on his profile. There he was, older, a little less boyish, but the same cocky smirk she remembered. Married, two kids, a life that seemed… normal.

Suddenly, she felt the need to get up. She padded to the kitchen, the hardwood floor cold beneath her feet. She needed a drink, something to settle the sudden flutter in her chest.
