The keys clattered against the counter as she tossed them down, the sound echoing in the kitchen. She’d spent the whole afternoon baking, the scent of vanilla and sugar filling the air, a scent now tainted by a bitter aftertaste. The elaborate cake, iced with painstaking care, seemed to glare back at her, a monument to a celebration that would never happen.

She ran a hand through her hair, tugging at the strands. The news had hit her like a physical blow. The party, meticulously planned, cancelled. A flimsy excuse, a last-minute change of heart. She felt a burning need to dismantle everything, to erase the evidence of the wasted effort. She grabbed a knife, staring at the perfectly formed icing flowers.

A sudden impulse. She opened the fridge, grabbed a carton of ice cream and a spoon. The sugary, cold treat was a temporary distraction.
