The bookstore was crammed, the shelves overflowing with titles. It usually soothed her, but today the pages felt like a weight, the words blurring together. She ended up in the poetry section. A woman with bright pink hair was browsing nearby. They struck up a conversation about a shared interest in a certain author. The woman, whose name was Jessica, then casually mentioned Leo and the trip they were planning to the coast. The very trip Leo had assured Emily they were taking.

Emily felt the blood drain from her face. "The same trip he was going to take *me* on?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly. Jessica looked confused and then, slowly, the pieces clicked.
