He slammed the apartment door, the sound a punctuation mark on the argument he'd just had with his wife. The air inside felt thick, stagnant. He needed to get out, to *do* something. He walked down the street, head down, hands jammed deep in his pockets.

A flash of brown on the pavement snagged his attention. A wallet. He nudged it with his foot, then knelt down to pick it up. He flipped it open. The money was a shock, a sudden, bright bloom of green.

He thought of the bills piling up, the overdue mortgage, the strained silence that had become the soundtrack of their marriage. His jaw tightened. He held the wallet, the leather warm against his skin, and felt a pull, a powerful current tugging him in two directions.
