The afternoon sun, though muted by the drawn blinds, still managed to spotlight the dust motes dancing in the air. John felt trapped, like he was caught in a slow-motion film of his own life. The walls of the dorm room seemed to be closing in on him. He felt an intense need for something… anything… to change.

He paced the room, unable to sit still. He chewed on his lip, a nervous habit. The journal, lying open on the bed, caught his eye. A chill swept through him, even though the room was warm. His roommate, Kevin, emerged from the bathroom, whistling a cheerful tune, unaware of the turmoil brewing in John’s chest.

John felt a surge of adrenaline, his heart pounding in his chest.
