Sarah stood before the ornate mirror, her reflection staring back at her. Her grandmother’s engagement ring, a sapphire glittering on her finger, felt like a burden. Her mother had asked her to sell it. The weight of the request, the history the ring represented, pressed down upon her.

A nervous energy coursed through her veins. She couldn't stay still. She paced back and forth, her steps hurried and uneven. She felt as though something was about to break.

She tore the ring from her finger and thrust it onto the dresser. She needed an escape. Gathering her belongings, she decided to drive to the coast, hoping the ocean’s vastness would offer a semblance of peace.
