The bus ride home felt excruciatingly slow. David fidgeted in his seat, his leg bouncing a restless rhythm against the worn floor. The scenery outside the window blurred into a meaningless stream of colors, each passing moment amplifying his internal turmoil. The scholarship, a blessing at first, had turned into a curse.

The details of how he got it didn't matter, he knew that. The consequences did. The other student's family, the loss, the hurt. He needed to do something, anything, but the feeling of being trapped was overwhelming. He should've spoken up sooner.

He got off the bus a few stops early, too keyed up to sit still. He began walking.
