The apartment felt too small, the walls closing in on him. He felt as if there was something he should be doing, something *more*. He stared at the ceiling, feeling antsy. The feeling had been building for weeks now, a low-level buzz of impatience.

He was tired of the routine, the predictable rhythm of his days. A companion, something to care for, to take up his time, would be the perfect fix. He needed to be needed. He could picture a dog.

He wanted to feel a change in his life, and he would do whatever he needed to make it happen. He picked up his phone, scrolling through pictures of dogs, ignoring the objections of his roommate, who was adamant about the idea. He was going to have a pet.
