“Fine, fine,” she said, forcing a smile that felt brittle. “I understand.” But inside, Sarah was unraveling. Dr. Klein’s move to another university felt like a betrayal. Her stomach was twisted in knots. She found herself picking at the skin around her nails, a nervous habit she hadn't indulged in years. The world seemed to shrink around her, the air thick and heavy. She needed to lose herself in something, to distract herself from the gnawing dread. She grabbed her keys. Maybe a drive.
