He hadn't slept in two days, the thoughts chasing each other around in his head like trapped animals. He kept checking the time, the minutes stretching into an eternity. He longed for stillness, but found himself unable to achieve it. He felt the intense need to *do* something, anything to quell the internal storm.

He saw the void. The absence.

Where the great oak, his childhood companion, had stood, there was only the raw wound of the stump, exposing the empty earth. A tremor ran through him. He couldn’t seem to stand still. He turned and walked away, the ache in his heart a constant companion.
