The hum of the highway traffic felt like a relentless, throbbing pulse against Leo's eardrums. He gripped the steering wheel, knuckles white. He’d pulled over to the side of the road, unable to continue his drive. He was on his way to see his girlfriend, but the news - a sudden text message from his mother about a half-sister – had stopped him in his tracks.

He couldn’t focus on the road, on anything. He hadn’t felt grounded since he’d heard the news. He slammed his fist on the steering wheel, the sharp crack of the sound startling him. He felt as if he could shatter like glass.

He had to get *somewhere*. He put the car in gear and started driving again. He didn't know where he was going, but he couldn't stay still, couldn't stay here.
