The train chugged along, a metal beast carrying Maya towards another day. The city skyline, a familiar backdrop, offered little comfort. Her legs bounced incessantly, a nervous energy she couldn't contain. She felt confined, like a bird in a gilded cage.

She’d spent the last year working on a new approach to sustainable architecture, a passion project born of her deep concern for the environment. She felt it was the only thing giving her any sort of meaning. She walked into the design conference.

She saw the presentation schedule. Another architect, a man named Ben. The title of his presentation…the same, almost verbatim, as hers. Her heart slammed against her ribs. She was too late.
