Agnes paced the length of her cramped apartment, the worn rug offering no solace to her impatient feet. Sunlight, fractured by the blinds, striped the dust motes dancing in the air. She glanced at the bills piled on the chipped kitchen table, a knot forming in her stomach. Then, across the street, Mrs. Gable’s gardener arrived, not in a pickup truck, but in a gleaming, cherry-red convertible that seemed to hum with wealth. The man wore tailored overalls, which contrasted strangely with the pristine vehicle. Agnes clenched her fists.

A memory surfaced, of Mrs. Gable, always so polite, yet her voice was oddly smooth, almost...melodious, when she spoke. Agnes had always imagined her baking cookies and tending roses. Now, as she watched the gardener meticulously trim the already perfect hedges, a different narrative began to form in her mind, one of hidden fortunes and lavish spending.

The feeling in her chest was like a stretched rubber band, poised to snap. She abruptly grabbed her keys and fled the apartment, the front door slamming shut with a sharp crack that echoed her internal disquiet.
