The train rumbled along the tracks, a rhythmic pulse that did nothing to soothe the anxiety buzzing beneath Maya’s skin. She tapped her foot, her fingers drumming against her leg. She should be engrossed in her textbook, preparing for her chemistry exam. Instead, she stared out the window, at the blur of passing scenery, searching for something, anything, to capture her attention. She had a strange need to escape.

A notification. An email. Her application essay was now live. A shudder ran through her. It was a time capsule of who she used to be. The words, once meant to impress, now felt like a burden. She felt like she wanted to be somewhere else.
