The aroma of freshly sawn wood drifted through her open window, a perfume that evoked a sharp pang of envy. She sat on her balcony, her posture slumped, watching the vibrant activity unfold next door. She was stuck, rooted, while the world moved on.

She’d tried to read, but the words blurred on the page. She'd tried to write, but the pen remained still. The construction workers' laughter drifted across the air. She found that she could only manage to gaze.
