A tremor ran through Amelia as she stood in the school hallway, clutching the crumpled permission slip. Her daughter, Lily, practically bounced ahead, eager to find her classroom. The name on the door – Mr. Henderson – slammed into Amelia with the force of a forgotten memory. A dull ache settled in her chest, a familiar weight she hadn't realized she was still carrying.

The fluorescent lights hummed, echoing the hollow feeling in Amelia’s stomach. She remembered the relentless way Mr. Henderson would call on her, his gaze sharp and judging. The air suddenly felt thick, almost suffocating, and she longed to be anywhere else. She watched Lily disappear into the classroom, her bright smile a painful contrast to Amelia’s heavy heart.

She found herself lingering in the parking lot for an unusually long time, the engine of her car a cold, metallic comfort. The sun dipped lower in the sky, casting long shadows across the empty spaces. She felt an unwelcome pull to stay there, to postpone the inevitable return home, where the silence would be even louder.
