The bustling city outside the coffee shop seemed a million miles away. Ethan stared into his lukewarm latte, the foam now a sad, deflated mess. The argument with Ben, about the internship, had left a bitter aftertaste. Ben insisted Ethan had turned down the offer, that he’d been the one who’d said he wasn't interested.

He traced the rim of the cup with his finger, the ceramic cold against his skin. The accusations swirled in his thoughts, relentless and unforgiving. He felt hollow, as if a vital piece of him had been chipped away. He leaned back in the chair, a sense of weary resignation settling over him.
