The coffee tasted like ash. Liam stared at the medical report, his reflection staring back at him from the glossy page. He’d driven straight home from the clinic, leaving the unfinished paperwork on the counter. His chest felt constricted.

He'd wanted to scream, to lash out. Instead, he sat at the kitchen table, the silence pressing in around him. He'd poured another cup of coffee. The wrong details, the incorrect diagnoses... they were a betrayal. A theft of his identity.

He thought of his upcoming birthday, the party he'd been planning. Now, the thought of celebration felt hollow, impossible. He slumped forward, his face buried in his hands.
