The aroma of freshly baked bread filled the kitchen, a smell that usually lifted Leo's spirits. But tonight, it only deepened the hollowness inside him. He watched Chloe, humming softly, meticulously kneading the dough, and speaking to it in a language Leo barely understood, a beautiful, fluid Portuguese. A tightness settled in his throat.

She turned, her face radiant with happiness, and smiled. "Dinner will be ready soon, querido!"

He managed a weak smile in return. He wanted to share her joy, to be part of this intimate world she was creating. He felt the familiar weight of his own inadequacies, the feeling of not quite measuring up. He quietly went to the living room and sat on the couch, his posture slumped.
