The party was in full swing, music thumping, laughter echoing off the walls. Then, James saw him, his partner, Michael, conversing fluently with a group of Japanese businessmen. James, who knew only a few basic phrases, stood rooted to the spot, a feeling of… estrangement washing over him.

He excused himself to the bathroom, the noise of the party suddenly overwhelming. He splashed cold water on his face, staring at his reflection, a stranger in a familiar face. It was as though a secret language had developed.
