The bustling city outside his window seemed far away. David felt detached from it all. He'd spent the morning staring at the screen, the cursor blinking, mocking his lack of productivity. He avoided the kitchen, the empty cabinets a constant reminder of his dwindling funds. The mailbox brought no relief. A glossy, professionally printed birthday card. The inside had only printed words. He felt an emptiness that even the noisy streets couldn't fill. He tossed it onto the overflowing pile of junk mail, and his shoulders slumped.
