Rain lashed against the windowpane, mirroring the storm brewing inside Elias. He stared at the worn photograph clutched in his hand. It showed him and Leo, younger, grinning, covered in mud after a daring adventure. He'd been so sure Leo would recognize him, the shared history, the unbreakable bond.

The encounter had been brief, Leo's gaze skimming over him as if he were a stranger. "Sorry, don't know you," he'd said, and turned back to his phone. A dull thud resonated within Elias, like a vital organ had been abruptly disconnected. The world seemed muted, the colors desaturated.
