“How could they…?” Daniel’s voice trailed off. He held a photograph of his grandmother, always portrayed as a picture of domesticity, standing at the bow of a ship, a silk scarf billowing in the wind, with a man who wasn't her husband. The woman in the photo was a stranger.

His breath felt shallow, his heart thumping erratically in his chest. The carefully constructed image of his family, the tales he’d grown up with, had been shattered. He felt a chilling sensation in his limbs.

He let the album fall from his hand, the sound echoing in the silent room. He wanted to escape, to run, to disappear.
