Gemotions

The floral arrangements seemed to mock him with their vibrant colors. He felt a deep hollowness, an echoing space inside him that seemed to grow with each passing moment. He didn't want this party. He wanted time to stand still. He was overwhelmed.

He watched his parents, chatting animatedly with guests. His father's laugh, usually so boisterous, was subdued. His mother, her eyes unusually bright, kept glancing at him. He knew they expected some show of affection. He found himself unable.

He slipped away from the main hall, seeking refuge on the patio. The cool air offered little relief. His jaw ached from clenching it so tight. The speech was a looming shadow, a task he dreaded.
