Rain lashed against the attic window, mirroring the torrent inside Amelia. She clutched the yellowed paper, a letter addressed to her own mother, written when she was just a teenager. The ink had faded, but the words, meant to confess a teenage angst, seemed to leap from the page, a raw wound. A deep ache settled in her chest, making it hard to breathe.

She traced the loopy handwriting, a ghost of her younger self. The girl who penned these words was drowning in unspoken feelings. The present felt heavy, pressing down on her shoulders, just like it did on that girl so long ago. She could practically taste the bitterness in her throat.
