The envelope was plain, the handwriting, his grandmother's, instantly recognizable. Inside, the draft resignation letter. Charlotte traced the looping script with her finger, reading how her grandmother, a teacher, was quitting to open a pottery studio. The studio never materialized. The letter spoke of dreams and possibilities, now a ghost of a life unlived. A coldness settled in Charlotte's stomach. She thought of the countless hours her grandmother had spent grading papers, her shoulders hunched with weariness. The letter became a physical thing in her hand, heavy and burdensome.
