He stared at the letter, its delicate script a painful reminder of a past he'd tried so desperately to bury. His jaw was clenched, and his stomach felt like a cold stone. Across the room, a half-finished crossword puzzle lay abandoned on the coffee table. He should have finished it, perhaps it would have kept his mind busy.
