The photograph, tucked inside the envelope, showed them both, young and laughing. Eleanor traced her finger across the image, her lips pressed into a thin line. The letter itself was short, contrite, but it was the photo that really affected her. The vibrant colors of the picture now seemed incredibly distant. It had been twenty years, a lifetime in which she had constructed a life built on solid ground. Now, a simple letter, and a photograph, shook the very foundations. She sat alone, the silence of the house pressing against her.
