The ornate jewelry box felt heavier than usual in her hands. She carefully opened it, the velvet interior revealing a collection of trinkets, each holding a memory. But tucked beneath a strand of pearls, she found a small, leather-bound notebook. It contained meticulous records: dates, amounts, and a signature that sent a jolt of ice through her.

She lowered herself to the floor, her back against the cool wood of the bedroom door. Her breath hitched. The air seemed thin, difficult to draw in. He had claimed he was strapped for cash last year. She’d quietly picked up extra shifts at work to help. The shame, and the shock, settled like a physical weight on her shoulders.
