He stared at the safe deposit box key in his hand. He’d found it tucked inside his wife’s sewing kit, the one she cherished. She had always been so open, so trusting. Now he found himself questioning everything. He couldn't shake the sudden and unfamiliar ache in his chest.

He felt a strange numbness creep into his extremities. He felt empty. He glanced around the living room, at the furniture they had chosen together, the photographs that lined the walls. Each object now seemed to radiate a different energy.

He walked to the window, the image of his garden blurred by the tears welling in his eyes. He didn’t want to go to the bank, but the key demanded he find out. He just stood there, the key a cold, metallic weight in his palm.
