The chipped ceramic mug felt heavy in Mrs. Peterson's hands, the lukewarm tea doing little to soothe the chill that had settled deep within her bones. The retirement party was over, the well-wishes said, the cake devoured. Now, the silence of her empty apartment pressed in on her, a palpable weight. The floral arrangement on the kitchen table seemed to mock her with its vibrant colors, a stark contrast to the grayness that had enveloped her.

A small package arrived at her door the next morning. No return address, only her name and address scrawled in a familiar, looping script. Inside, nestled in tissue paper, was a small, intricately carved wooden bird, its eyes tiny, dark beads. It was a gift from Michael, a boy she had taught over thirty years ago. He was the one who struggled with everything.
