The coffee had gone cold in the mug resting on the porch railing. Sarah traced the rim with her fingertip, lost in a daze. Her neighbor, Mrs. Gable, fidgeted beside her, clutching a pamphlet about tree removal. The wind rustled through the branches of the birch tree, a sound that usually comforted Sarah, but today, it felt like a mournful sigh. Her throat felt tight, as if something was constantly pressing against it.

Mrs. Gable's voice, usually so bright, had an edge of hesitation as she explained the tree's encroaching limbs, its potential to damage her roof. Sarah stared at the ground, at the dry leaves. She had stopped tending to her garden weeks ago. Everything felt pointless. The sunlight seemed to drain away, leaving her in a world of muted tones.

"It's just… been a rough year," Sarah mumbled, her voice catching. The prospect of the tree's removal felt like another layer of loss, a fresh wound opening in the landscape of her life. She wished Mrs. Gable would just leave, leave her alone.
