The weight in Leo’s chest was almost unbearable, a constant pressure that made breathing difficult. His eyes traced the outline of his fence, the boundary between his overgrown, weedy lawn and the meticulously kept garden of Mrs. Ramirez. A gentle knock on the door disrupted his aimless wandering.

Mrs. Ramirez, her smile normally a beacon of warmth, seemed a bit self-conscious. "Leo," she began softly, “I was thinking of planting some tomatoes this year and my little area isn’t quite big enough. I was hoping I might be able to use a bit of your space near the fence?” Leo’s gut clenched.

The very thought of someone's hands reaching into that soil, of the potential for life blooming where he could only see decay, brought a tightness to his chest. He managed a strained smile and nodded, his voice a gravelly whisper. The idea felt heavy, like a physical burden.
