"Condos? Seriously?" Maya muttered, staring at the glossy flyer. She felt a profound emptiness, a feeling like a vital part of her had been ripped away. She reread the words, the vibrant pictures of renovated kitchens and gleaming new appliances mocking her.

She went through the motions of making dinner, but the ingredients seemed to resist her efforts. Her fork scraped against the ceramic plate with a grating sound. The food tasted of nothing.

She wandered through her apartment, touching the worn furniture, remembering the countless nights spent there. The apartment’s familiar intimacy seemed to be disappearing into thin air.
