The aroma of cinnamon and apples clung to the air in the kitchen, a familiar comfort. Grandma’s apple pie, a Sunday staple, sat cooling on the counter, radiating warmth. Sarah hummed along to the radio, arranging flowers in a vase on the table, her movements slow and unhurried. The sunlight streamed through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. Her mother’s voice, a little hesitant, broke the peace. "I have something to tell you all."

Sarah turned, a smile already forming on her face, expecting a tale of a misplaced key or a funny story from the grocery store. Her smile faltered. Her mother, usually so vibrant, seemed to shrink slightly, her shoulders pulled in.

"I’ve decided to convert to Buddhism," she announced, her voice barely a whisper. The clinking of Sarah's vase against the tabletop seemed to echo in the sudden silence. Sarah felt a peculiar tightness in her chest, as if someone had gently squeezed her heart.
