Sunlight streamed through the kitchen window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. John hummed along to the radio, flipping pancakes with practiced ease. The aroma of butter and maple syrup filled the room, a familiar and comforting scent. His kids would be down soon, clamoring for breakfast.

He glanced at the calendar; no appointments, no pressing deadlines. It was a blank canvas of a Saturday morning, stretched out before him like a promise. He took another sip of his coffee.
