The last rays of the sun cast long shadows across the living room. Leo sat on the plush sofa, a dog at his feet, both of them relaxing after their walk. The television played softly in the background. It was the end of a perfect day.

He felt his shoulders relax, the tension of the day melting away. He’d earned this. He sighed contentedly.

Then, a sudden, piercing noise ripped through the air. A hammer pounding on wood, over and over, with increasing urgency. His eyebrows furrowed.
