The bell above the door chimed, announcing her arrival. Sarah entered the pawn shop, the air inside thick with the scent of aged metal and forgotten possessions. She'd been feeling a certain satisfaction lately. Her recent art exhibition had gone well. She’d felt the tension melt away, replaced by an inner lightness.

She strolled through the cluttered aisles, her fingers tracing the edges of the glass display cases. Then, she saw it. A ring, a platinum band set with a cluster of tiny diamonds. It was the ring. She knew it. It had been her grandmother’s. It felt like coming home.

She smiled gently. “Excuse me,” she said to the shopkeeper, her voice steady. “Could I see that ring, please?” She gestured to the sparkling item.
