The gentle sway of the ship was the most comforting rhythm Clara knew. The sea breeze whipped her hair as she stood on the deck, sketching the endless expanse of the ocean. The horizon met the sky in a perfect, unbroken line, promising limitless possibility.

Her phone vibrated in her pocket. The scholarship results. Denial. The words hung in the air, heavy and unwanted.

Her hand dropped, the pencil tumbling to the deck. The rhythmic motion of the ship became an unwelcome jostle. The endless horizon, previously a source of wonder, now felt immense and isolating. The wind, once a caress, now seemed to bite. Her stomach twisted, and the image she had tried to draw seemed to mock her.
