She stood center stage, bathed in the spotlight. The familiar hum of the theater, the scent of dust and anticipation, soothed her. For five years, she'd been the lead ballerina, her body a vessel of grace and precision. The music was a familiar pulse, driving her movements. When the director announced a change, a new interpretation of the classic, she felt a brief moment of disturbance.

“I’m envisioning you as the villain,” the director said, his eyes alight. He spoke of new challenges.

The suggestion felt wrong. Her body, accustomed to the delicate flow of the Swan Queen, would need a complete reset. The training for this particular role was something she knew nothing about. She tried to smile, but her lips felt stiff, the smile brittle.

She began to study the movements, feeling the unfamiliar weight in her muscles, the unfamiliar tension in her gut. She focused on the steps, the required ferocity. The familiar rhythm of ballet no longer comforted her.
