Gemotions

Maya hummed along to the music emanating from her earbuds as she walked through the campus quad. Sunlight filtered through the leaves, dappling the path before her. She was relishing the anticipation of a relaxing weekend, her assignments were complete and submitted. A gentle breeze lifted her hair, bringing a fresh, floral scent from the nearby gardens.

The call came as she passed the administration building. A number she didn't recognize. She hesitated, but answered. The voice on the other end was professional, firm. It spoke of similarities, of sources, of things she hadn't written. Her legs felt suddenly heavy, rooted to the spot.

The pleasant sound of the birds chirping above her faded, replaced by the pounding of her heart. The world around her seemed to shrink, the trees and buildings closing in.
