The familiar scent of cinnamon and old books was a comfort. Amelia sat in her favorite armchair, the worn leather cool against her skin. The library was her haven, the shelves her fortress, the silence her shield. She knew exactly where everything was, from the Dewey Decimal System to the specific shade of light that filtered through the arched windows. Mr. Peterson, the librarian, had been there for as long as she could remember, a silent guardian of the printed word.

A new woman, younger and brisk, stood behind the counter. "I'm the new librarian," she announced cheerfully. "Mr. Peterson has retired."
