The best man’s speech had just finished, and a round of applause filled the room. Jake clapped along, chuckling at the heartfelt anecdotes. He’d found a comfortable spot near the window, gazing out at the starlit sky. The evening, thus far, had been everything he’d hoped for. He had a good life, a good job, and good friends.

Then, there she was, standing in the doorway, framed by the light. His breath hitched.
